Chapter Thirty-three
Friday, October 23
6:50 P.M.
“Angel, wake up.”
Angel opened her eyes. She’d been dreaming. Of her and Seth. And here he was.
She smiled sleepily. “Hey.”
“Baby, Will’s home.”
She gazed at him, the remnants of the dream evaporating. “Wait . . . what did you—”
“Will’s home. It’s almost seven.”
“At night? Oh my God.”
“It’s okay. We fell asleep.”
“It’s not okay.” She pulled the covers tightly to her chin, realizing she was naked under them. Naked! “What am I going to do? He’s going to hate me.”
“He won’t. He’s chill.”
She shook her head. “He can’t know. I’m so embarrassed.”
“Don’t worry.” He climbed out of bed and into his clothes. “I’ll tell him we just got out of the pool and you’re changing.”
“You think it’ll work?”
“Yes, hurry.”
She remembered her hair wasn’t wet. Neither was his. “Wait!”
He stopped, looked back. “I’m rinsing off. Because of the chlorine. And your hair’s not wet.”
“Got it.”
Angel was out of the shower and into her clothes in record time. Carrying her shoes, she tiptoed down the stairs. When she reached the landing, she followed the sound of their voices.
They stood across from each other at the kitchen island.
“I want to tell her,” Seth said.
She froze. Her? Was she the one they were talking about?
“That’s not a good idea,” Will responded. “She could react badly. Very.”
She told herself that eavesdropping was rude, but couldn’t bring herself to stop. They had to be talking about her. What might she react badly to?
“I trust Angel. Completely.”
He trusted her completely and here she stood spying on him. She didn’t deserve his trust. Angel stepped out from the doorway, fully into the hall, a greeting on her lips.
She stopped. Her sketch book. Open on the counter between them.
She felt as if the greeting had lodged in her throat. As if it might choke her. Her heart hurt. Seth knew how she felt about his uncle seeing her drawings, but he’d shown them to him anyway? It was a slap in the face, a complete violation after the intimacy they’d just shared.
Before she could say so, Seth did it for her. “Uncle Will, you had no right to look at her drawings without permission. I told you how she felt.”
Not Seth. His uncle. Relief took her breath.
“They’re good. Really good. Just like you said.”
“That doesn’t change the fact that you violated her trust by—”
“It’s okay, Seth,” she said, stepping into the kitchen. They both turned her way and she forced a comfortable smile. “If I didn’t want anyone to look at it I shouldn’t have left it out.”
“No,” Will said, “Seth’s right. I apologize. It was an intrusion. But I don’t regret it.”
“Uncle Will!”
“Because they’re too good.” He crossed to her, took her hands in his and looked her in the eyes. She experienced the strangest sensation. Of warmth and connection—but cold and distant as well. As if she was both drawn to and repelled by his touch.
It was strange. And dangerous and uncomfortable.
But somehow, oddly, satisfying. Delicious.
“They’re meant to be seen. And admired, Angel.”
She felt herself flush.
